Why are my child’s liver tests abnormal?
Liver blood tests can become abnormal after infections, medicines, or because of liver
disease. More tests may be needed to find the exact cause.
What are the signs of liver disease?
Yellow eyes, dark urine, pale stools, swollen tummy, poor growth, tiredness, itching, or easy
bruising can all be signs of liver disease.
Can children get fatty liver?
Yes. Fatty liver is becoming more common in children, especially those who are overweight.
Healthy eating and regular exercise are the main treatments. Although fatty liver is more
common in overweight children, it can also occur in lean and fit children. If fatty liver is
detected in a child who is not overweight, further blood tests and evaluation by a pediatric
gastroenterologist are recommended to identify any underlying cause.
Does liver disease affect growth?
Yes. Long-term liver disease can affect nutrition and growth if not treated early.
